Jobs Suffer As Dublin Casino Closes

Fitzwilliam Card Club Casino Closes With Loss Of Close To 100 Jobs

Dublin Casino Closes

It would seem that new gambling laws have caused the Fitzwilliam Card Club Casino to close its doors, leading to the loss of close to 100 jobs. The owners claim that the new Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act, 2019 made it impossible for it to continue its operations.

The private members’ casino in central Dublin closed its doors on Monday. Lawyers advised the owners of the club to cease operation citing that under the current act, it would need a gaming permit to continue operation.

A spokesperson of Fitzwilliam said it had made a presentation to the Government on the detrimental effect of the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act on its business.

“Sadly, our pleas fell on deaf ears, and an amendment was not granted to safeguard the business and our 80 employees,” he said.

Gaming and Lotteries Act

President Michael D Higgins will sign the Gaming and Lotteries Act into law in the coming weeks. The law prohibits firms from operating without a license or permit. In fact, breaking the would be seen as a criminal offence.

For Fitzwilliam, getting a permit or license is almost an impossible task, with the operator falling short of the standard of the new act.

Fitzwilliam Card Club provided casino games like roulette, blackjack and many more to its customers. It also hosted several poker tournaments
