casino news Casinos Claim Repairs From Hurricane Damages Could Cost Millions
Casinos along the Mississippi’s Gulf Coast are angered by the extent of damages caused by hurricanes. The recent Hurricane Zeta has left lots of properties damaged. The casinos claim they require millions of dollars to carry out repairs.
Mississippi-based Yates Construction has filed for $48 million in building permits to repair various damages to 50% of Biloxi’s resorts.
The city issued permits for repairs in the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino, Hard Rock and Casino, IP Casino Resort and Spa, and Harrah’s Gulf Coast Hotel and Casino.
Repairs are needed in the parking garages that were flooded during the Hurricane. Electrical and plumbing systems also sustained substantial damages, as did some of the casino buildings’ exterior.
A good number of the casinos along the Gulf Coast closed during the hurricane. However, some of them have started reopening.
Out of the 26 commercial casinos in Mississippi, 12 are along the Gulf Coast. Of these numbers, eight are in Biloxi.

Residents along the Gulf Coast were greeted by Hurricane Zeta in the early hours of October 28. The Category 2 storm had winds of 100mph ripping through the city. The hurricane killed at least five people.
Some casinos in New Orleans had to close their doors temporarily as the hurricane approached the area. According to sources, the casinos in the New Orleans area did not receive any significant damage.
The Hurricane Problem
Zeta is among five named storms to pass through Louisiana during the Atlantic hurricane season in 2020
Of the five major storms, Hurricane Delta and Laura were the deadliest. Both were just a few weeks apart, each leaving a path of destruction and death in southwestern Louisiana. Four casinos in the region were severely damaged.
Overall, the Atlantic hurricane season recorded 30 named storms this year. Close to 50% of the total storms affected the United States.
Record Numbers
The Atlantic hurricane season has produced 30 named storms so far this year. Of that number, 12 hit the United States.
According to the Weather Channel, “The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is one for the record books. The winds in three of these storms – Iota, Delta and Eta – “intensified by 100 mph in 36 hours or less.”
According to weather experts, this occurrence has only happened eight previous times in 169 years. Although the hurricane season officially comes to an end on November 30, it doesn’t mean there won’t be more storms this year, according to experts.
“The end may not be the end,” one expert said. “The tropics will definitely bear watching as we go into December.”
