County Seeks To Turn Casino Project To Residential Project
For some, there is a sense of pride that comes from seeing their plans come to life and all the benefits that comes with that. Others, on the other hand, are not so fortunate to see their projects come to life. The latter seems to be the case of a 13-year-old plan to build a high-rise casino.
The plan features not just a casino but also a shopping mall, as well as theater. But it seems the plan will not see the light of day.
Owners of the property are hoping county commissioners will greenlight the revised master plan to turn the property at the east of Highway 395 across from Carson Valley Plaza into a casino.
A debate has already been set aside by commissioners for parties involved in the project to air their opinion and plead their case.
The highlight of the report prepared for the commissioners shows that the casino project will cover 203 acres of the 624-acre North Douglas County Specific Plan.
As of now, the property is zoned as neighborhood, commercial, tourist commercial, general commercial, single-family residential and public facilities.
The owners are hoping the debate will give them a chance to remove the tourist commercial tag, and tweak the general commercial while adding multi-family residential.
Bringing The Plan To Life
Planning commissioners had previously voted on the project. The result was split 50-50, with no official decision made yet. According to the county, for the plan to come into fruition, it would require five votes to pas. Currently, the votes sit at 3-3.
For more than 13 years, the property has been earmarked for some sort of development. As the time of approval in the 2000s, the county was in serious competition with Carson City to attract retail development and increase the sales tax
The plan is to get approval now and turn the site into a casino destination. Although the plan looks like it won’t come to life, developers remain hopeful.
