Unemployed Nevadans Fed Up With State COVID-19 Response
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and thousands of unemployed Nevadans Enraged by the state’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Goodman aired her frustrations earlier in the week by telling City Council that the state’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been far from ideal.
“This shutdown has become one of total insanity in my opinion, for there is no backup of data as to why we are shut down from the start, no plan in place now to move through the shutdown, or how even to come out of it,” Goodman told the council.
She called the state’s response insane.
“It’s not going away this month, next month, and much like the flu and other viruses that have impacted populations around the world, this virus, or a derivative thereof, will be part of what we work through going forward,” she added.
Goodman said that while the state has lost 128 Nevadans, “Those whom we have lost represent less than half of one percent of our population.”
A few weeks back, the Mayor said Las Vegas would find it challenging to survive Governor Steve Sisolak’s 30- shutdown.
All commercial casinos in the United States are locked. Most casinos have furloughed their employees in the past few weeks.
Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts, and Station Casinos are one of the few casinos that will pay workers during the shutdown period.
Unemployed Nevadans Are Furious
It is not just Goodman that is calling out the Governor, Nevadans have become restless as well.
The lockdown of businesses has led to thousands of Nevadans losing their jobs. Nevada’s unemployment system has been oversaturated, with more than 300,000 people filing claims. The high number means people won’t get their payments as at when due.
Sisolak has asked for patience. “I know this is hard. I get your frustration,” Sisolak said, recounting a story from his youth when his father was laid off.
“Sick and tired of excuses!” Deborah Cimino, an unemployed Nevadan, said. “Do somethinGovernor! This is a disgrace. I am entitled to unemployment. Applied six weeks ago. Nothing!”
