Macau Casino Bans Off-Duty Casino Staff

Forbidden, Interdiction, Prohibition, Prohibited, No

For most casino workers, and gaming staff, being off duty is a time to hang around the casino, and just cool off after a long shift. This is something that is common in most casinos around the world. Despite the general acceptance of this around the world, Macau is placing a ban on off-duty workers from entering the gaming area.

The ban was issued on Friday, December 27 2020, and was confirmed by the Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. The ban will cover a workforce of around 54,000. These people are either employed either by a locally licensed gaming center or one of the casino operators in the city.

The ban covers the following sets of people; people employed as cleaners, cage personnel, cashiers, food and beverage works; and people working in public relations and surveillance operations. The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau has a list of the job positions that will be affected by the ban

What The Ban Entails

The Law regarding the ban of off-duty workers does not in any way require operators to provide listings for individuals that it covers.

Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau confirmed that they would not force casino operators to use facial recognition tech to help to enforce the ban. The Bureau has said that it has inspector on gaming floors to help enforce the rules. These officials have been given specific training in relation to the new rules.

It is the duty of the inspectors to check whether or not the new casino entry ban rules are adhered to in the casinos.

The bureau has also said that prior to unveiling the new rules, it had held several meetings and consultations with the casino operators in the city. These meetings were to ensure that the operators understood the terms of the off-duty ban, and assist operators in training employees on how to comply with the new rules.
